OPTION 1: COMBINED
Broaden student understanding around the connections between stress and their mental and physical health. Exploratory activities ask students to look at the relationship between their thoughts, sensations and behaviors. Students will be guided to recognize the different manifestations of stress, their specific response patterns, and some of their unique coping mechanisms. A variety of strategies to aid self-monitoring, self regulation and stress reduction will be practiced. If used for SHSM, students will also visit stations to enrich understanding of additional techniques. I.e. coloring and art therapy, aromatherapy, massage and trigger point therapy, biofeedback, and of course...exercise. Stations may vary depending on resource availability. All facilitators have a range of experience in the health fields (i.e. pychology, social work, alternative medicine, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)).

Experts suggest time again how critical breath is to managing stress and related disorders. Embark on a journey with breath as you learn how to use it to support health and mitigate stress. For SHSM, it can be used as a Stress Management option, Approaches to Healing elective, advanced training for the arts, or as an experiential learning opportunity. For the regular classroom, infuse as a curriculum add-on or in-class field trip as an adjunct to your science/biology, or health curriculum topics around respiration. For the arts, use for music or performance based training where breathwork is a critical part of the task. Fundamentals of breathing will be covered, including the 5 types of breathing (nasal, diaphramatic, rate, rhythm, and deep breathing), followed by a demonstration of each. Students will explore various applications for each, and optimal type of breathing for specific conditions (i.e. stress and axiety, sleep, focus/concentration etc).
